"PROPER PREPARATION" (DANIEL COYLE AND JOHN WOODEN) John Wooden’s preparation for practice was legendary. He focused on improving the ability of his staff to improve their ability daily to teach their players to properly execute the proper fundamentals required for peak performance. Little if any time was spent on teaching the players what to do based on the next opponent.
In Practical Modern Basketball Coach explained his process:"I like to sit down with my assistants immediately after practice, and briefly analyze and discuss the practice of that day. . I would always make little notations, maybe some activities went too long, a couple of minutes or 5 minutes too long on this, or we need a bit more attention to this. When planning a practice, I would look back to see what we had done on the corresponding day the previous year and the year before that.
I could tell you what we did every minute of practice in my 27 years at UCLA. I could go back to the 48-49 year and tell you what we did on November the 15th minute by minute. I think that doing those plans helped me tremendously, as I could always refer to them."
Coach Wooden did this daily for 27 years!
Coach Wooden’s "After Action Review" is also used by the Navy Seals. In his book, The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle provides a list of good questions to ask:
What is your "After Action Review" process? How often do you do it?
