"CATCHPHRASES CONNECT IDEAS WITH ACTION" (DANIEL COYLE AND JOHN WOODEN)

Catchphrases are short phrases or quotes that deliver an idea and hopefully connect the listener with a specific behavior. "You deserve a break today." was used to inspire the listener to skip cooking and head for McDonalds. Danny Meyer, one of the most successful restaurateurs in history uses catchphrases to guide his teams. In his book, The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle expanded on the topic:

Each of Meyer’s catchphrases provide a vivid mental model for solving the routine problems the staff faced.

"Making the charitable assumption" (means that when someone behaves poorly, you should avoid judging them and instead give them the benefit of the doubt.)

"You can’t prevent mistakes, but you can solve problems graciously."

"The road to success is paved with mistakes well handled."

"Put us out of business with your generosity."

Here are a few catchphrases Coach Wooden used with his teams:

"Be Quick but Don’t Hurry."

"Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."

"Don’t mistake activity for achievement."

"Make each day your masterpiece."

"It’s amazing how much can be accomplished if no one is concerned with who gets the credit."

"The most important word in the dictionary is LOVE."

"A person can make mistakes, but they are not a failure until they blame others."

"The people who don’t make mistakes are the people who don’t do anything."

"Don’t try to be better than someone else – be the best you can be and never stop trying to improve."

"Don’t worry about things you can’t control."

"Don’t Whine. Don’t Complain. Don’t make excuses."

"Discipline yourself and others won’t need to."

Danny Meyer and John Wooden shared catchphrases  that would be helpful to their team members for the rest of their lives. What do you share?

COACH'S FAVORITE POETRY AND PROSE

Failures

'Tis better to have tried in vain,
Sincerely striving for a goal,
Than to have lived upon the plain
An idle and a timid soul.

'Tis better to have fought and spent
Your courage, missing all applause,
Than to have lived in smug content
And never ventured for a cause.

For he who tries and fails may be
The founder of a better day;
Though never his the victory,
From him shall others learn the way.
