"PROPER PERSPECTIVE HELPS HAPPINESS"

When you are faced with a difficult situation, whether it is personal, professional, physical or mental, it can be difficult to keep your "Enthusiasm". Keeping things in proper perspective can be helpful.

Coach Wooden put it this way: "If we magnified blessings as much as we magnify disappointments, we would all be much happier."

Coach gave me the following handout; the author is anonymous. I hope you find it helpful:

Lord, Forgive Me When I Whine!

"Today, upon a bus, I saw a lovely girl with golden hair, I envied her … she seemed so gay … and wished I were as fair.

When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle; She had one leg and wore a crutch; But as she passed … a smile! Oh, God forgive me when I whine, I have two legs.

I stopped to buy some candy. The lad who sold it had such charm. I talked with him. He seemed so glad. If I were late ’twould do no harm.

And as I left he said to me, "I thank you. You have been so kind. It’s nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, "I’m blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine, I have two eyes.

Later, while walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue. He stood and watched the others play. He did not know what to do. I stopped a moment, then I said, "Why don’t you join the others, dear?"

He looked ahead without a word, and then I knew he could not hear. Oh, God forgive me when I whine. I have two ears.

The world is mine. With feet to take me where I’d go, with eyes to see the sunset’s glow, with ears to hear what I would know …

Oh, God forgive me when I whine. I’m blessed indeed. The world is mine."

COACH'S FAVORITE POETRY AND PROSE

Just A Boy

Get to understand the lad-
He's not eager to be bad;
If the right he always knew,
He would be as old as you.
Were he now exceeding wise,
He'd be just about your size;
When he does things that annoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy.

Could he know and understand,
He would need no guiding hand;
But he's young and hasn't learned
How life's corners must be turned;
Doesn't know from day to day
There is more in life than play,
More to face than selfish joy-
Don't forget he's just a boy.

Being just a boy, he'll do
Much you will not want him to;
He'll be careless of his ways,
Have his disobedient days,
Willful, wild and headstrong, too,
Just as, when a boy, were you;
Things of value he'll destroy,
But, reflect, he's just a boy.

Just a boy who needs a friend,
Patient, kindly to the end,
Needs a father who will show
Him the things he wants to know;
Take him with you when you walk,
Listen when he wants to talk,
His companionship enjoy,
Don't forget, he's just a boy!
